A brief background of the character:
Tamaki Suoh is the one responsible for creating the host club at Ouran. He's a bit careless and leaves most of the financial aspects of the club up to Kyouya, the vice president. He's extremely good looking and is capable of charming almost everyone he meets. Tamaki is a very honest individual who sees beauty in every girl, but not necessarily superficial beauty and he's not afraid to express those feelings.
This is the main reason why he's considered the 'prince' type and manages to get 70% of the customers at Ouran. His overly emotional attitude makes it so he can be happy one minute and extremely depressed the next. He is easily touched and will often help someone out with their problems even if they have nothing to do with him.
When Haruhi arrived at the Academy, Tamaki was the last person to figure out that she is a girl and is also her self-proclaimed 'father'. He is also very curious about commoners and is currently addicted to instant coffee and ramen.
Growing up, Tamaki spent 14 years in France with his mother. However, when his mother's business started to fail, they were in debt. Because his mother was also very sick, the money was desperately needed. Tamaki's grandmother agreed to help financially only if Tamaki moved to Japan. Tamaki decided to help his mother and moved, but his grandmother still treats him like dirt and calls him "filthy"
The reason for this is because Tamaki's grandmother still holds a grudge against Tamaki's mother for seducing her only son, though she still needs Tamaki in order to be a potential heir to the Suoh estate.
Fortunately, Tamaki has such a positive personality that he doesnt let things like that get to his head. He has some idea as to where is mother is currently living, but makes no real attempt to find her.
He is currently still trying to learn how to adapt to commnoners life ( because he is so used to being rich he finds Haruhi's life quite facinating)and actively participates in trips to the mall and enjoys buying various snack foods.
